Buttermilk Pie

Buttermilk Pie is a classic Southern dessert featuring a rich, creamy custard filling with a subtle tang from buttermilk. Made with simple pantry ingredients and baked in a flaky crust, this pie offers a perfect balance of sweet and tangy flavors that evoke warmth and nostalgia. Ideal for family gatherings and festive occasions, it’s a timeless treat that’s both comforting and delicious.

Ingredients

Scale

Filling

  • 1 ¾ cups buttermilk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 ½ cups granulated sugar
  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted and slightly cooled
  • 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour (or cornmeal as a thickener)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Crust

  • 1 9-inch pie crust (homemade or store-bought, flaky or tender)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Crust: Roll out your pie crust and carefully fit it into a 9-inch pie dish. Trim any excess dough and crimp the edges to create a neat border. You can use a homemade crust or a quality store-bought one for convenience.
  2. Mix the Filling: In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, sugar, melted butter (cooled slightly), and buttermilk until smooth and fully combined. Add the flour and vanilla extract, whisking continuously until the mixture is silky and uniform.
  3. Pour and Bake: Pour the filling into the prepared crust. Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 50 to 60 minutes, or until the center is mostly set but still has a slight jiggle when gently shaken.
  4. Cool Completely: Let the pie cool at room temperature to allow the custard to finish setting. Once cooled, refrigerate the pie for at least a few hours to deepen the flavors and ensure a firm slice.

Notes

  • Use room temperature ingredients for a smooth, even filling blend.
  • Do not overbake; a slight wobble in the center is perfect as it firms upon cooling.
  • Brush the crust edges with an egg wash before baking for a golden finish.
  • Use fresh, full-fat buttermilk for best texture and flavor.
  • Allow the pie to cool fully before slicing to enhance texture and ease serving.
