Ingredients

Scale

Base Ingredients

  • 2 cups Bisquick or biscuit mix
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, grated (plus extra for topping)
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted (for brushing on top)

Optional Seasonings and Add-ins

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/4 teaspoon paprika (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh herbs (rosemary, thyme, or chives, optional)
  • Diced jalapeños or dash of cayenne (for spicy kick, optional)
  • 1/4 cup cooked bacon bits or ham pieces (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grate the cheddar cheese and measure out all other ingredients to have them ready and within reach.
  2. Mix the Dough: In a large bowl, combine the biscuit mix, milk, and most of the grated cheddar cheese (reserve some for topping). Stir gently just until everything is evenly combined to avoid overworking the dough and ensure it remains tender.
  3. Shape Into a Loaf: Transfer the cheesy biscuit dough into a greased 8×4 inch loaf pan. Smooth the top with a spatula or your fingers for even baking.
  4. Add Toppings: Sprinkle the reserved shredded cheddar cheese evenly on top of the dough. Optionally, brush the surface with melted butter to create a golden, rich crust after baking.
  5. Bake to Perfection: Place the loaf in the preheated oven and bake for 25-30 minutes until it is puffed, golden brown, and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Cool and Serve: Let the loaf cool in the pan for a few minutes before slicing. This helps it hold together and reveals the delicious cheesy pull inside.

Notes

  • Don’t overmix the dough to keep the biscuits tender and airy.
  • Use good quality, sharp cheddar cheese for best flavor.
  • Use room temperature milk and butter to improve dough consistency.
  • Adjust baking time if using a loaf pan size different from 8×4 inches.
  • If the crust browns too quickly, tent the loaf with foil halfway through baking.
