French Toast Roll-Ups

French Toast Roll-Ups

French Toast Roll-Ups are a fun, quick, and customizable breakfast treat that elevates classic French toast by rolling sweet or savory fillings inside soft, crustless bread slices. Dipped in a cinnamon-spiced egg batter and cooked to golden perfection, these roll-ups are perfect for busy mornings, kid-friendly, and ideal for adding various fillings to suit your taste.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread

  • 8 white sandwich bread slices, crusts removed

Batter

  • 3 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup milk (dairy or plant-based for vegan option)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon sugar (plus a pinch for the batter)

Cooking

  • Butter or cooking spray, for frying

Fillings (choose your favorite)

  • Cream cheese
  • Peanut butter or almond butter
  • Jelly or jam
  • Fresh fruit (mashed strawberries, bananas, blueberries)
  • Mini chocolate chips or Nutella (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Bread: Trim the crusts off the bread slices and use a rolling pin to flatten each slice until thin enough to roll tightly without breaking.
  2. Add the Filling: Spread your chosen filling evenly over each flattened bread slice, leaving a small border around the edges to prevent leakage.
  3. Roll Up the Bread: Carefully roll each slice tightly, pressing lightly along the edge to seal and keep the filling inside during cooking.
  4. Make the Batter: In a shallow dish, whisk together the eggs, milk, cinnamon, and a pinch of sugar until smooth and fully combined.
  5. Cook the Roll-Ups: Heat a pan over medium heat and melt butter or spray with cooking spray. Dip each roll-up fully in the batter, then place seam-side down in the pan. Cook for 2-3 minutes per side, turning until golden brown on all sides.
  6. Serve Warm: Remove from the pan and serve immediately with your favorite toppings such as powdered sugar, maple syrup, whipped cream, fresh berries, or dipping sauces.

Notes

  • Remove crusts completely to ensure smooth rolling and prevent breakage.
  • Use slightly stale or dry bread for better batter absorption without sogginess.
  • Don’t overfill to avoid leaks during cooking.
  • Cook over medium heat to achieve a golden crust without burning.
  • Keep cooked roll-ups warm in a low oven until serving.
