Ingredients

Scale

Shrimp

  • 1 pound fresh cooked shrimp, peeled and deveined

Liquid Base

  • 2 cups tomato juice or clamato
  • 1/4 cup fresh lime juice
  • 12 teaspoons hot sauce (adjust to taste)
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Vegetables and Herbs

  • 1 cup chopped tomatoes
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped red onion
  • 1/2 cup chopped cucumber
  • 1/4 cup chopped cilantro
  • 1 jalapeño or serrano pepper, finely chopped (optional and adjustable)
  • 1 ripe avocado, cubed

To Serve

  • Tortilla chips or saltine crackers (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Shrimp: Start by boiling fresh shrimp in salted water with a slice of lime for about 2-3 minutes until they turn pink and are just cooked through. Drain and let them cool completely, then chop into bite-sized pieces or leave whole, depending on your preference.
  2. Mix the Cocktail Base: In a large bowl, combine tomato juice or clamato with freshly squeezed lime juice, a splash of hot sauce, salt, and pepper. Stir well to create a flavorful, tangy base.
  3. Add Vegetables and Herbs: Gently fold in the chopped tomatoes, red onion, chili peppers, cilantro, cucumber, and cubed avocado to add texture and brightness.
  4. Combine Shrimp and Chill: Add the cooled shrimp to the bowl and toss everything together to coat evenly. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to allow flavors to meld.
  5. Serve and Garnish: Give the cocktail a gentle stir before serving. Adjust seasoning if necessary, then serve chilled in glass cups or small bowls, garnished with extra cilantro or avocado slices, accompanied by tortilla chips or crackers.

Notes

  • Use the best quality fresh or frozen shrimp for optimal flavor and texture.
  • Do not overcook the shrimp to keep them juicy and tender.
  • Use fresh lime juice instead of bottled for a brighter, natural tang.
  • Adjust chili peppers gradually to customize the spice level.
  • Chill the cocktail for at least 30 minutes to enhance flavor melding.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
  • Freezing is not recommended as fresh vegetables and avocado will lose texture and flavor.
  • This cocktail is best served cold and does not require reheating.
